The ban was announced ahead of PM Narendra Modi's 3-day visit to Australia. In a letter dated 19 May, Federation University said that they have observed an increase in the proportion of visa applications being rejected from certain Indian regions by the Department of Home Affairs. We expected this to prove to be a short-term issue, but it is now clear that a trend is emerging. In its letter, Western Sydney University informed agents that the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat have been identified as the most at-risk areas. Owing to the urgency of the matter, the University has decided to stop recruitment from these regions in India with quick effect.
