Latest Updated On 04/10/2022: CBI has arrested a Russian national from Indira Gandhi International Airport in connection with the hacking case during JEE Mains 2021. Mikhail Shargin is the main accused of hacking during the exam. The CBI has said that a Russian man has been arrested in connection with the investigation of alleged rigging in JEE (Mains) examination last year. The central agency had issued a 'look out circular' against the accused.

According to CBI, a case related to allegations of irregularities in JEE (Mains) exam 2021 is underway. The accused Shargin was detained by the Bureau of Immigration at IGI Airport, Delhi while reaching India from Almaty, Kazakhstan. During the investigation of the case, it was revealed that some foreign nationals were involved in malpractices in several online examinations including JEE (Mains) in connivance with other accused. The role of a Russian national was also revealed, who allegedly tampered with a software (on which the test was conducted). He had helped other accused in hacking the computer systems of suspected candidates during the examination.


A case was registered on September 1, 2021 against a private company and others including its directors on charges of irregularities. The director posted at the examination center, his tout and support staff and other unidentified persons were accused of wrongdoing. It was alleged that the director and other people of the said institute were manipulating the online examination. They were facilitating admission in top NITs to the aspiring students by taking huge amount by solving the applicant's question paper through remote access.
